YNP Report

Seasons are changing in Yellowstone Park.  The bad news is that increasing water temps on the Firehole have caused a serious case of lockjaw in the river’s trout.  The fishing on the Madison is also starting to suffer from warm temps on the Firehole, but there is still some PMD action to be had in the mornings, terrestrials during midday, and caddis in the afternoon.  But fear not, the slow down in these rivers’ productivity is accompanied by increasing action on the rest of the Park’s waters.  The Gallatin and Gibbon Rivers are seeing strong PMD action in the morning and caddis in the afternoon.  Adding to the bug smorgasbord on the Gallatin are spruce moths and some green drakes.

Fishing in the northeast section of Yellowstone Park is also starting to heat up.  Flows on the Lamar are dropping and the river is clearing, signaling the beginning of some fantastic dry fly fishing.  Caddis and PMD’s are emerging and the terrestrial action is just beginning.  Ant, beetle, and small ‘hopper patterns drifted along cut banks are already picking up some very nice fish, and the fishing will do nothing but improve over coming weeks.  The PMD and caddis parade continues on Soda Butte and Slough Creeks, with the added bonus of green drakes on Slough.  For some great stillwater angling, try Trout Lake near the Pebble Creek campground.  Scuds, pheasant tails, and leeches are the go-to flies for the lake’s stocky cutthroats and cut-bows.

From the sounds of it, it’s time to dust off your soft hackles and head into the park!  The Firehole fished great this holiday weekend with mid-morning Baetis and several waves of afternoon PMD hatches.  Grab your favorite fishing buddy, your  Sparkle Stackers and a few Comparaduns then head out there!
