Armstrong’s

Armstrong’s has continued to fish well and especially for the McKinnons. It you remember the spring creek video from the last report you are familiar with John McKinnon and his big brown. Well his father could not be outdone so on their last day on Armstrongs Rod landed the largest brown of the week. Way to go Rod and John and I look forward to fishing with you again next year.

More PMD’s

The PMD fishing has remained good on the Paradise Spring Creeks.  Over the 4th we were able to sneak out for a little fishing with Storefront Manager Marya Spoja,  Head Guide Aaron Hansen and John McKinnon.  Enjoy the video.

Yellowstone River Oil Spill

We all awoke to the terrible news on Saturday morning that one of Exxon Mobil’s pipelines crossing the Yellowstone River had ruptured and spilled 40 to 50 thousand gallons of oil into the Yellowstone.  The spill is located 120 miles down stream from Livingston and is affecting some of Montana’s most productive agricultural land and most productive fish and wildlife habitat.  The spill has not affected any portion of the trout water on the Yellowstone.  So, if you are planning a trip to fish on the Yellowstone for trout this summer, you should rest assured that there has been no impact upon the fishery from this spill.

Our hearts go out to all of the folks of southeastern MT who are now having to deal with this man-made disaster after having been walloped by catastrophic flooding earlier this year.  It has been a very tough spring for those of us living along the Yellowstone.  This spill reminds all of us of the cost of our reliance upon fossil fuels for our primary energy source.  It also reminds us that Montana’s water quality is very fragile.

We hope the warmwater fish of the lower Yellowstone recover quickly.  It is some of our favorite bass water and still is home to one of the rarest fish in North America, the Pallid Sturgeon.  Kudos to Governor Schweitzer for holding Exxon Mobil accountable.  Lets all hope that the clean up is both efficiently and effectively completed.  Additional details can be found at www.billingsgazette.com

Is that It for the Yellowstone?

The last couple days we have been keeping an eye on the Yellowstone River to see if the Sweetwater Fly Shop will be getting flooded.   Despite the standing water around the shop the merchandise and facility have not seen any water damage   The bad news is with all the ground water we have not been able to flush the toilets but the good news is that we will have to postpone our half price sale.   This has actually boosted employee morale…..Hey Rosy find another public toilet.

The other news worthy point is that when I checked the Billings Gazette to get updated on the Yellowstone River, I was pleasantly surprised to see there was no press on the flooding.  Instead I was inundated with articles about the medical marijuana law changes here in Montana.   Sorry Dudes I guess you’ll have to start rowing your boats again.

River Watch

Yesterday we finally saw the air temps get into the 90′s here in Livingston. So we are watching the river flows with great care.  One of the indicators is the Lamar River in Yellowstone Park. If it continues to rise like it did last Thursday there may be more flooding on along the banks of the Yellowstone.
