Harrison Resevoir

Our quest for clear water led us to the Harrison Reservoir last weekend.   Although the fishing was not red hot we were able to stay in to relatively consistent fishing.  Stillwater Guru Timm Rosenbach had us dialed in from the get go with his array of technical top secret lake patterns……Hares Ears! Aaron Hansen also threw in some interesting techniques, showing us his uncanny ability to lose every fish he hooked.  Great stuff guys!

Sand Bag Party

Hi All,

Please come and join us for the “Last Annual Sweetwater Sand Bag Party.”  Sunday June 12th at 1PM.  Our goal is to fill 1500 sand bags.  Half will be on reserve if needed at the Fly Shop and the other half will be donated to others in the area in need of sand bags.  Bring gloves, shovel and a wheelbarrow if you have one.

Cold beverages will be provided……if you know what I mean.  Please call or email with questions.  223-3550.

Thanks and see you there.

A Day on the Creeks

Over the weekend, as the mercury hit 80-something and our river began its overdue climb on the cfs chart, some of us here at Sweetwater spent the afternoon on Armstrong’s with Mr. Spring Creek Extraordinaire himself, Brant Oswald. A perfectly sunny day with barely a breath of wind translated into few rising fish, though Timm was able to coax a fish into eating a baetis dry.  We got a bit of a history lesson, a few Oswald secrets (or are they…creek-rets?), and a few fish too. All three creeks are fishing great, so come on over to fish them while we all patiently wait for that muddy river to turn green.  Stop by the shop and we’ll tell you which flies have been working best for us. While you’re at it, help us fill a sandbag or two.

Yellowstone River Watch

Over the weekend we saw our first warm temperatures of the spring.  With highs near 80F the flows on the Yellowstone increased a great deal finally breaking 20,00CFS.  On top of the run off we have also had rain all day Tuesday which may cause more local flooding.  However for those on the flood watch, the good news is that with cooler temperatures the river may slow its upward climb.  But it is never to early to start preparing for what may be coming.

Livingston Golf Course Prepares for Flooding

Warmer Temps Cause Concern

After a long gray winter and spring there is no doubt that we are all ready to get a little sun on our skin.  However as the temperatures rise we will watch the water levels on the Yellowstone with great care.  With higher than average snowpack in the Yellowstone drainage there is a high probablity that there will be flooding in its path.  This has become quite obvious in Livingston where the hardware stores are carrying sandbags and there are trailers parked accross from the gorcery store with sandbags for sale.

In the meantime we will keep fishing the Spring Creeks and Montana’s Tail-waters and Resevoirs.  Thanks for checking the Yellowstone River Report and we hope to see you at the Sweetwater Fly Shop.
