It looks like we are finally in for some warmer weather with temps in the mid 60′s to low 70′s through the weekend. With that, we should get one last shot at the Mother’s Day Caddis hatch before run off begins.
We expect to see heavy hatches throughout the valley in the next few days with peak activity in the afternoon and early evening. Nymphing and streamer fishing should be good earlier in the day, then switch to dries once the bugs start to pop. Double dry rigs with patterns like the Sweetwater McDougal or Irresistible Elk Hair Caddis trailing a smaller imitation like the X2 Caddis or Everything Emerger work great once the fish are on the adults. Just before the hatch, a dropper such as the Translucent Pupa or the Pearl Soft Hackle is hard to beat. It should be a great weekend of fishing on the Yellowstone, so don’t miss out.
