It turned out to be a nice day on the Yellowstone. The forecast called for rain and snow and we got neither. The water temp is back up into the low-mid forties which has helped the fish to get their feed bag on again. Nymphing was the ticket today as the Baetis hatch never really materialized. There a few March Browns around also, just not enough for the fish to be mesmerized and feed heavily on the surface. There were spots in some flats where there were some heads, however, the sub surface action was good enough to convince us to stay with the double nymph rig. As usual any kind of Prince worked well along with a Pat’s Rubberlegs and size 16 black or red Copper John in the foam. Today I fished with Jim MacAllister the NRS rep for our area. Jim ended up having a decent day hooking up with several of our average Yellowstone trout. We didn’t spend much time throwing the big stuff, that will have to wait until next time.
The forecast for the next few days has wednesday being the warmest day of the week in the low 50′s. The rest of the week look for mid to high forties with a few rain drops here and there. We’re better off not to talk about the “W” it is what it is. Call the shop in the mornings and we can get you some more up to date info. We are now going to be open on Sundays so stop in and say “HI”.
